TRR356 Outreach Project

The TRR356 research project "Genetic Diversity Shaping Biotic Interactions of Plants," employs a unique and innovative strategy by leveraging natural genetic variation to uncover and understand the molecular mechanisms behind plant interactions with other organisms. These interactions occur at the physical interface between host plants and infecting microbes, where constant molecular communication drives the co-evolution of infection and defense strategies. Key factors influencing these interactions—i.e. chemical signals, nutrient flows, macromolecules, and toxins—undergo evolutionary changes, creating a diverse array of genetic determinants. This diversity is a valuable resource for discovering new genes, understanding their functions, and enhancing symbiosis and pathogen defense.

The TRR356 includes a strong public education component, located primarily at the Munich Botanical Garden. By engaging with the public, TRR356 can increase awareness of the importance of plant genetic diversity and its role in biotic interactions, thereby fostering a greater appreciation and support for scientific research and technologies. Furthermore, programs and events targeted at schools and universities can inspire the next generation of scientists by showing them the exciting possibilities in plant genetics and molecular biology. This can help attract talented young researchers to the field, ensuring a robust future workforce.
